thinking about anathema device and the crushing weight of predetermination….. thinking about how anathema has grown up her whole life surrounded by the occult & the strange & improbable but in the MOST rigid, normal, probable, for lack of a better word boring way possible
& how for her living in a world of witchcraft and prophecy hasn’t opened up possibilities, it’s foreclosed them! her whole life is marked out on index cards by generations before her, and her proximity to the unexpected has just made her life an endless series of expectations to fulfil
& the resonances this has with the generational expectations placed on eldest or only daughters, and on the children of immigrants, (particularly as anathema is latina in the tv series!) and the slight ring of bitterness in her voice when she says we’re professional descendents bc this is the only life she’s ever known
and yet, despite that, she’s so endlessly curious! she’s so continually intrigued by the world of the supernatural beyond agnes nutter’s book, the world of childhood beyond the well-meaning but rigid memorisation that marked her own! having the conspiracy theory magazines delivered to lavender cottage, and telling adam tales about atlantis, and following the Them into the forest to watch their mock witch trials - not because she thinks at this point that adam has anything to do with armageddon, but because she’s curious! and intrigued by their game! and full of love for these creative joyous gang of chaotic friends who haven’t yet known magic in the strictest sense, but in another way, know the unexpected like the back of their hand!
thinking about all anathema’s little quirks and curiosities and desires and hopes that spill out of the confines of her “”“"destiny”“”“ and how hard she tries to suppress them and how, ultimately, they are hers to embrace! and this is the very first day of the rest of her life! and she can finally view magic with the wonder from which it was birthed!!!!!!!!
Anathema is life goals because she got a PhD in her teens, got bored, decided to look into the apocalypse, then bought a cottage in the countryside and moped around waiting to get laid and/or for the world to end while drinking lemonade

i know, Crowley and Aziraphale were very iconic but honestly, Anathema’s aesthetic was literally next level. Long, witchy skirts? A cosy, little cottage? Hanging out in the forest and befriending the kids and local people? Giving weirdly specific and obscure responses to normal questions? Drawing in the ancient book your grandma has written over four hundred years ago? Literally being a witch? Inspiring.
